Really Simple Syndication is abbreviated as RSS. It is considered as a family of Web feed format. The reliance of the websites over the RSS news feed has increased in the recent years because it enhances the users traffic on the websites. RSS syndication is aimed to share the headlines and the web content. It is a lightweight XML format which was originated in 1997 by User Land. Netscape also used it after its release in 1997.
The three main objectives of RSS syndication include increasing the users traffic on the website, gathering the information and the distribution of the news or updates. In addition, it is also considered very important for the additional content distribution services. For sharing the news through RSS, the XML grammar is used which is a set of HTML like tags.
RSS syndication is important because it facilitates the updates of work like videos, audios, news headlines and the blog entries. The format of RSS is kept standardized in the format of an RSS document. An RSS document is also known as channel, feed or web feed document. Along with the full or the summarized text, this document also holds the metadata like date of publishing and the authorship. The standardized format of the document facilitates the automatic syndication of the content. The great benefit of RSS syndication goes to the readers because they gets continuous timely updates after getting the subscriptions.
For reading the RSS feeds, software is used which is known as RSS reader, feed reader or an aggregator. The software can be connected with the web based, desktop based or mobile based devices. The purpose of keeping the standardized XML file format is that it allows the publisher to publish the information for once and then it can be used for many programs.
The subscription is given to the users through feeds URL. For the creation of the data formats, the RSS syndication uses the XML formats. The RSS syndication formats were first introduced in March 1999. The popularity of RSS syndication increased between 2005 and 2006.
The modules are used in RSS syndication like in RSS syndication 2.0, three modules are used which are Ecommerce RSS 2.0 Module, Media RSS 2.0 Module and Open Search RSS 2.0 Module. These modules are created because their aim is to extend the basic XML schema. XML schema is considered important because it results in dynamic syndication of the content.
In this way, by keeping the standardization, diversity can be achieved. Besides that, the dynamism is achieved without changing the core specifications of the RSS syndication. Moreover, the static as well as the dynamic information is given in the RSS text file. Hence, we can say that RSS syndication really provides an efficient way of updating readers.
